Our 5 best tips for getting into working from home

Many freelancers and consultants work from home, either full-time or occasionally. But following the recommendations of the Public Health Authority, all of a sudden, large parts of UK’s workers were asked to pack up the laptop and set up a home office. We at Cool Company want to share our own tips on how to make the home offices work.

1. Keep your routines
Working hours are as important if you work in the office or at home. The constant presence of the laptop should not mean that you are constantly present. Take a lunch break, make a coffee or tea and leave the job when the workday is over. Start and end of the working day as you normally would, for many people, this could be taking a walk, just like the normal commute.

 2. Do not get caught in the couch
A home does not usually have ergonomically correct furniture like an office, so a little creativity can come in handy. Make sure you stretch regularly and move around, and be mindful of your posture. Remember, the sofa may look nice today, but your back doesn’t appreciate it in the long run.

 3. Reducing distraction
People are good at finding things that “NEED” to be done at home as when working from home? Try and get rid of the distractions as much as possible. For example, make sure to have snacks and other essentials
you need at home so that you do not suddenly have to run errands.

 4. Utilising technology
From a technical point of view, we have no real barriers to working from home. There are many smart services for video calls, group chats and the like. Why not have lunch with colleagues over Skype?

 5. Pants on!
Although work from home may not really require any dress code, many feel that in the end, it is nice to dress for their workday. Also, avoiding any embarrassing situations if webcams are requested at video conferencing. Pants on simple.

Home offices may feel tedious and complicated for many, but with a few simple steps, we will be able to make the best of the situation. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
